Half the Sky

Have you read the book titled, Half the Sky by Kristof and WuDunn?    You will meet extraordinary women struggling with situations like sex slavery, poverty, honor killings and genital cutting.   It  calls us to get involved in the global movement to emancipate women  and shows us how to help these women go from anger and sadness to hope.  Education and empowerment training can help women find their voices and show them how to nurture assertiveness so that girls and women can stand up for themselves - fearless and not frightened by anyone!

One point - they were so many in this book - after 9/11, concerns about terrorism triggered interest in an unlikely constituency - women.   Countries that nurture terrorists are disproportionally those where females are marginalized, and dropping bombs may not help as much as educating girls and empowering women.

The book is worth your time...it sheds light on how we can empower the women in our lives to become fearless and more importantly to care about the  plight of those suffering around the world.  Yes, it would give us purpose to see their plight and do something about it.

P.S.  If you have read my other posts, you will realize that I am a strong believer in the teaching of Christ, and in no way am I ascribing to the 'women's liberation' that we hear about our culture.  No, I am thinking about what Jesus said..."don't forget the weightier things...mercy, justice and love."
